How to Improve Digital Habits?
It’s the same story time and time again. You’re right in the middle of doing something productive, be it a work meeting or having a good work session and your phone lights up with a notification quickly shifting your focus to the distraction rather than the task at hand. We’ve ALL been there. Apple proudly announced a few years ago that there had been 7.4 TRILLION push notifications pushed through its servers. Today, that number is 100% higher. While there are many tools available to us to help us improve our digital habits and work productivity, there are also things – like turning off notifications – that we can physically do ourselves to help stop distractions.
Another idea is not to take ‘distractions’ to bed with you. Did you know that 56% of smartphone users check their phones within an hour of going to sleep? A lot of us think our phones help us fall asleep at night however, our bodies are wired to respond to natural night and our phones make sure we’re constantly bombarded with artificial light which revs up the brain, pumping hormones through our bodies to keep us warm, alert and awake…no wonder why we actually have trouble shutting down at the end of the day, and if you’re one of those people keep in mind that research has shown exposure to ‘blue light’ suppresses the production of melatonin more than any other type of light. Therefore, to sleep and feel better try getting rid of technology at night. That means buying an alarm clock and no devices after 20:00. This will help you to relax and sleep better.
Recent research revealed that 34% of Gen Z, or people born between the mid -1990s and early 2000s, say they’re permanently removing social media, and 64% say they’re taking a break from it. Reasons included worries about time-wasting (41%), feeling it was too negative (35%), privacy concerns (22%), too much pressure (18%), too much commercialization (18%), and that it makes them feel bad about themselves (17%).
As Gen Z is the rising generation, this study reveals the social media craze may be on its way out.
People are realizing you don’t have to be on Instagram or Facebook to connect with people—and in fact, these platforms may make you feel even more lonely and disconnected than you would without them. Therefore as far as something else you can do to change your digital habits, taking a break from social media should definitely be one of them
